Job Interview Tips

Learning the right job interview tips can take a lot of stress out of the interview process, and give you the best chance at landing the job. When you go to a job interview you need to realize that chances are very good that you will be only one of several candidates that they are interviewing for the open position. This means that in order to give yourself the best possible chance at being the person hired you need to master the art of interviewing. You need to learn how to set yourself apart from the crowd so that the person interviewing you sees you as the clear choice. By following these job interview tips you can come out of an interview looking like someone that is an asset.

Dress to impress. Regardless of what type of job you are interviewing for you need to make sure that you are dressed in a professional manner. First impressions matter quite a bit, and showing up for an interview in a t-shirt and jeans is a great way to make the wrong one. On the other hand showing up in a shirt and tie, or even a suit will make an excellent first impression. Showing up dressed in a professional manner shows the person conduction the interview that you care enough about landing the job to have come well dressed.

Prepare some follow up questions of your own. In many interviews the person conduction the interview will ask you if you have any questions for them. This is where preparation becomes so important. Before going to the interview take the time to do some research on the company you are applying to work at. Learn how they have been doing and anything else that you can about them. Then when the times comes to ask questions, you can ask intelligent ones.

Make sure to emphasize your strengths when answering questions. Many interviewers will ask you about anything you may have struggled with in the past. It’s important that you acknowledge that you have struggled with issues since everyone has at some point or another. However when you talk about struggles make sure that you put a positive spin on it. Turn a struggle or a failure into a learning experience, and then explain how the situation helped you to grow and improve.

Provide examples with your answers. During your interview if you tell your interviewer that you have a specific skill or ability make sure that you back it up with an example of how you have used this skill or ability before. Ideally you should emphasize how this skill can be used in a professional setting, and how it could benefit the company you are interviewing with.
Be concise with your answers. Many people make the mistake of trying to be too thorough when they answer questions during an interview. There is a fine line you need to walk between being too simple with an answer, and being seen as someone who is rambling. Make sure that you answer each question completely, but also make sure that you don’t continue to talk for a lot longer than is necessary.

Be honest. If you are asked about having a specific type of skill that you lack then admit that this is something you aren’t familiar with. Even if this ends up costing you the job it’s a better outcome than being hired and lacking the skills needed to do the job. If you lack a skill that is necessary for the position make sure to tell the person conducting the interview that you are always quick to learn new things, and you would be happy to do whatever it takes in order to succeed.

Be on time. On the day of your interview make sure that you know exactly where you are going, and give yourself plenty of time to get there. Remember that first impressions matter, so showing up late is one of the worst things you can possibly do to ruin your chances of being hired. When you show up late you are showing the interviewer that you are unreliable, and that if you are hired you may have attendance issues. You are also giving them the impression that the interview wasn’t that important to you since you couldn’t be bothered to show up on time.
