Career Placement Test – College career readiness

If you are contemplating a career, then you can take a career placement test to help you make your decision as to what industry and job you should apply to. Your career can define your entire adult life, and a career placement test can help you find the job that is most suited for you.

But there are several different types of career placement tests you can take, and they are as follows:

  1. Skills assessment tests. This is perhaps the most familiar type of test you can take to discover the right job for you. Like your school tests, these tests try to measure the skills and knowledge that you already have. What you currently know can tell you about what jobs you can take now or even in the future.

This type of test is also known as a transferable skills assessment (TSA). For example, what you learn to do as a teacher working with children can also help you work as a social worker working with minors.

  1. Aptitude tests. These tests try to measure how well you can learn different types of skills. That’s what aptitude means. These tests will try to evaluate your spatial perception, your motor skills, and your capacity to understand subjects like math.

These tests do not measure what you have already learned, unlike those tests which you are used to in school. For instance, it doesn’t test what you know about math; it finds out if you can learn math quickly. It also doesn’t care whether or not you are interested in learning about math in the first place.

  1. Personality tests. Many jobs require a certain personality type if you want to do well and succeed. For example, being a salesman may require you to have an extrovert’s personality. If you don’t care much about interacting with people, the personality test can detect this so that you can avoid jobs for extroverts.

  2. Interest inventory tests. These tests try to find out what you are interested in, and then it compares your interests with the interests of the people who work in particular jobs. If your interests are identical with the workers in a certain profession, then you may be a good fit for that job.

These tests operate under the assumption that your interests will motivate you to learn, and that you are more likely to enjoy your job when your interests are satisfied. However, these tests do not measure your skills or your ability to learn the skills needed for the profession.

  1. Work values inventories. What do you consider important? How you answer this question can tell you what job you should take. These tests will try to determine what you value in your work, and then they will find the jobs that match your values and preferences.

Some people value a high salary, or perhaps the prestige associated with a certain job. Others may be more altruistic and regard helping others as the most important part of their work. Whatever it is that’s important for you, a career placement test can help you figure it out.
