Chefs are not only well-compensated. They are also well-appreciated. Remember the saying that the fastest way to a man’s heart is through his stomach?

But there are also some downsides to becoming a chef. One is that you would have to work in the evenings, weekends, and even holidays. It can also be very stressful, especially if your meals don’t meet the expectations of your customers.

Job Requirements

The profession does not really require formal training. There are many well-known chefs who did not go to a culinary school at all. Most of these chefs started and built their careers after finishing high school. But of course, you have an advantage if you went to a culinary art school.

Chefs usually receive training from culinary institutes or trade and vocational institutions. There are also culinary arts program that teach business and management geared at budding chefs who want to start or manage their own restaurants in the near future. These programs offer courses in nutrition, butchery, pastry preparation, culinary techniques, and specialty cuisine.

After earning a degree in culinary arts or graduating from a vocational institution, you are encouraged to pursue internship opportunities. This would allow you to apply the skills you have learned in the classroom. Aside from making your resume look more impressive to potential employers, it can also build up your confidence in the kitchen.

Like in most fields, you will have to take an entry level position like a line cook or kitchen assistant. Don’t frown at these job offers because you’ll eventually move up the ladder, so to speak.

Keep in mind that experience is the ultimate teacher. You may have learned how to prepare a dish in school but you’re still considered a neophyte as compared to someone who has done the same dish 400 times. So don’t be embarrassed to take on an entry level position since it can give you the opportunity to harness your cooking skills.

You can also enter an apprenticeship program that typically lasts two to three years. Here, you can work full-time with experienced chefs.

Certified Master Chef
