The first four years

While learning about how to become a surgeon you should also know how much time is required and what all you would be required to study to become a surgeon. It takes a span of four years before you earn your M.D (Doctor of Medicine) or D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) degree. The first couple of years you would be taught biochemistry, anatomy, psychology, medical ethics and other medical subjects in classroom as well as laboratories. The next couple of years you would be getting the real life practicing of whatever you have learnt when you would be allowed to treat patients under the supervision of medical officers and senior doctors.

Decide on the specialization

After graduating from medical school and earning the M.D. or D.O. degree, you need to get into a surgical residency program with a pre decided area of specialization. You would need to choose between the various branches of surgery which include cardiac surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, or general surgery. The span of a residency program would depend on the area of specialization and generally it varies from three to eight years. During the residency program, you would be associated with a medical center or a hospital and would be treating ailing patients under the supervision of senior surgeons and doctors.

Get the licensing done

Once you have completed the residency program now is the time to get yourself registered as a licensed surgeon. This is actually the last step of how to become a surgeon. Eligibility criteria for licenses vary from state to state, wherein some states would require you to give a written and practical examination along with the M.D. or D.O. degree and residency completion certificate. Once you clear the examinations and get licensed you are all set to be called a surgeon and liked and respected as a God.
