How to Become a Doctor

Do you want to know how to become a doctor? You may have heard that it takes many years of education to become one. Yes, that’s right. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to become a doctor, but the job itself is financially rewarding. Of course, you get to fulfill a noble task of helping others.

Undergraduate Program

The first step towards realizing your dream to become a doctor is to get a four year bachelor’s degree. Now many people would tell you that you have to take Biology but the truth is you can take other courses as long as you meet the required number of science courses.

Apart from that, you also have to perform well in college. It actually doesn’t matter if you took a non-medical course such as sociology, as long as you have the required number of science courses and have good grades. This way, chances are high that you’ll be accepted to a medical school.

Medical School

In order to get into a medical school, you’ll have to take and pass a medical college admission test or MCAT. Usually, aspiring doctors apply for medical school the summer after their junior or senior years. Most medical schools open their application in June. The entire application process takes an entire year, so you need to apply as soon as possible.

While your grades from your undergraduate program and MCAT score would be taken into consideration you also need to show proof of experience in a healthcare setting. If your undergraduate degree is not science related then you should volunteer in a hospital or clinic. You could also conduct research to prove that you have experience in the health care industry.

Keep in mind that medical school would test your determination to become a doctor. To say that it is tough to get into med school is an understatement. Do you know that in the United States only one out of 10 applicants is admitted to medical schools?

So what can you expect from medical school? It is normally a four year program divided into two parts. During the first two years you will devote much of your time in the classroom listening to instructions and lectures. On the third and fourth years you will be assigned to hospitals where you will learn the knowledge and skills essential to becoming a doctor.

Once you have graduated from medical school you need to pass board examinations. Apart from passing these tests you also need to enter residency programs in order to become a full pledged medical doctor.

Residency

Residency is a training program where you will be practicing under the supervision of a board certified physician. There are many types of residencies that you can choose from. The shortest program lasts for three years while the longest last for 7 years. You should choose a program that interests you since this will determine the specialty you will be practicing for the rest of your career.

After completing your residency you can practice your profession or undergo another training called fellowship. This is an optional medical training that lasts for three years.

Now that that you have learned how to become a doctor, are you ready to start chasing your dream?
