Information About Jobs in America

If you are looking for information about jobs in America then it’s important to look at the numbers. Statistics and data will help you to know which jobs are easy to get and which ones are most difficult to find. Furthermore, they can also tell you about certain trends in the American job market and how they can affect you. So if you want some good information about the American labor market then here are several important facts about the five most popular jobs in the United States, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Retail and Selling

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, “retail salesperson” is the most common job in the US, with around 4.5 million workers and employees claiming to work in retail in one form or another. The average annual income for these jobs is estimated to be around $25,300, and they are expected to grow by around 9.8% by 2022. Retail jobs are quite common across all kinds of industries. However, it’s also worth mentioning that around a third of all retail salespersons work part time, mainly because a lot of retail companies don’t want the financial burden of hiring full time workers. Despite these problems, however, retailing jobs are expected to grow in the years to come.

Cashiers

After retail, the next most common job in the United States is Cashiering. Cashiers in the U.S. usually earn around $20,400 per year, which is one of the lowest salaries in the country. Furthermore, cashiering is also one of the slowest growing job positions in the United States, and is expected to become slower as self-service checkouts and online stores become more common.

Food Preparation and Similar Service Workers

According to the BLS, the food service industry is the third major source of employment in the United States, and presently employs around 3 million employees. Unlike Retail or Cashiering, however, the food service job market in the United States is growing at a healthy rate, with a projected increase of around 14% by 2020. The only trouble with this kind of job, however, is that it only pays – on average – $18,800 per year and offers very little opportunities in terms of long term employment.

Office Clerk

According to the BLS, around 2.8 million people in the U.S. are employed as office clerks, and they generally earn about $30,000 per year. Clerks are expected to perform all kinds of tasks, including sorting mail, editing reports, distributing memos, filing documents and anything else needed in the office. Being an office clerk is also a relatively easy entry level position, and most positions don’t even require a college education. The only downside is that this kind of job doesn’t pay a lot of money when compared to most white collar jobs. Despite this, though, American clerical jobs are expected to increase by 6% by 2020.

Nurses

Finally, we have nursing. The BLS estimates that there are around 2.7 million nurses in the U.S., and this job is expected to increase by around 19.5% in the next 5 to 7 years. Unlike other popular occupations in the United States, however, an American nurse can expect to earn around $69,000 annually, which is well above the average salary for most Americans. Despite the generous pay, however, nursing can be a very demanding profession, and requires a lot of work and dedication.
